Experimental, emotional guitar melodies echoing through the cement walls of an Overland Park basement drew drummer and fellow High School classmate Cody Simon and guitarist Lane Briggs together to form Deviant Machine. While Lane and Cody were only 16 they wrote songs together as they went through several bass players and singers until they finally convinced online friend Dale Enslin to move from New York to Kansas City to join the band. Weeks later Charley Lewer the vocalist came by to hear them play. Charley immediately was welcomed into the band and gigs were lined up soon afterwards making Deviant Machine the band it is today.
The first recording of Shards of Glass, Walking Away and In Spite of You were performed live at Chapman Studios in one short midnight session with producer Justin Mantooth. A few short hours later, CDs were burned, the first thousand of which were sold out within weeks by fans.
